At both the Feb. 1 and March 1 Greenfield Planning Commission meetings, locals came out to voice concerns about the proposed Don Chapin Co. Batch Plant conditional use permit.
The proposed concrete batch plant will occupy 14.7 acres of the 67 acres northwest of the corner of Elm Avenue and Second Street. On the same block, between Second Street and Third Street, sits the Monterey County Public Works Corporate Yard.
In 1981, the property was designated for light and heavy industrial uses for the City of Greenfield. Currently, it is being used for agricultural and rural residential uses.
To the south and east, the property is bordered by agricultural/farm land, and to the west sits the public works yard. To the north is low-density residential and medium density residential housing, consisting of single-family homes and multiple family homes.
“Not all heavy industry is suitable for Greenfield,” said Greenfield resident John Brueggeman at the Feb. 23 meeting. He would potentially have the proposed batch plant as a neighbor.
He noted the distance to the established housing in the area as one of the reasons the property was a bad choice for the batch plant.
