Greenfield Bruins declare football barbecue a big success

Posted: Wednesday, Jun 6th, 2012

Summer is here, and the Central Coast YMCA in Soledad and the Community Center in Gonzales have several programs to keep kids busy with fitness, fun and learning. Also new this year, residents from Greenfield who are interested in the summer youth basketball can now register at Greenfield Community Center at Patriot Park.

Andrea Wasson, the education coordinator at the Central Coast YMCA said, "This year we are stressing service and giving back to the community."

Summer day camp activities this year consist of several fun and educational outings such as field trips to Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Atascadero Zoo, the Egyptian Museum in San Jose and many others.

Also at the Y, are activities such as the "Movin' and Groovin" program where kids 8-to-14 years old learn that dancing is a great way for kids to have fun while getting fit and making new friends. Coordinators said as the kids become more comfortable with moving to the music, you can see their level of self-confidence soar.

Youth basketball at the Y is another favorite for kids 3-to-14 years old, and it builds social and interpersonal skills, as well as teamwork and sportsmanship. This year, there is also Shotokan Karate for kids eight and older where the kids learn the importance of fitness, humility, respect, compassion and patience.

YMCA Executive Director Leti Bocanegra added "We want the kids to have a safe and fun enviroment to come to, all the while they are making new friends, learning new skills and bettering their education."
