GREENFIELD - The championship game for the South County Soccer League Youth 2000/2001 division was played last Sunday at the new soccer fields at Greenfield Patriot Park.
The game had the Panteras from Soledad playing against the Aztecas from Greenfield. In the end, it was the 18-5 Aztecas from Greenfield who just edged the Soledad Panteras by a score of 2-1.
Guest of honor, Greenfield Mayor John Huerta, was in attendance and presented the Championship trophy to the winners.
"It justifies all of the very hard work league officials and myself have done to make these soccer fields a reality," said Huerta Jr. "It's great to see this youth championship game and the community coming out to support their teams at this beautiful new facility."
It was a hard-fought battle with both teams playing well. The Soledad Panteras were lead by coach Gumaro Galvan, and he had a nice following of families and supporters at the new Greenfield soccer facilities to cheer on his team.
"This win is very special to me because most of this team has been together for the last three years, and we have been on the short end of the championship game all three times, it feels great to finally see the kids crowned as Champions," said winning coach, Hector Rocha of Greenfield.
The new soccer facilities on the western edge of town have six regulation size soccer fields on them, and it would not be possible without the generosity and willingness of Scheid Vineyards and the City of Greenfield to make this all happen.
Anthony Garcia of the Aztecs had both goals in the win and was clearly the MVP with his aggressive and hustling play. "I have worked hard with my dad for many years, this feels great to win the championship," said Garcia.
It was a festive atmosphere on a sun splashed Sunday afternoon and the people in attendance were treated to a very exciting game. Congratulations went out to both teams, as all the kids played like champions.
